If you see smoke from a burn
barrel at the Lipe farm their
probably not burning trash.
Nancy is firing pottery in a burn
barrel to produce decorative
ceramic art.  She layers the pots
with sawdust, straw, and kindling
while tossing in table salt,
“Miracle Gro” and chemicals like
iron oxide and copper carbonate
to produce pottery with random
shades of color from burgundies
to turquoise.
Nancy’s barrel fired pieces are
fired quickly with the whole
process taking place in a couple
of hours.  The finished work is
cleaned and sealed with
polyurethane to protect it.  Since
it is fired quickly and at a
relatively low temperature, this
pottery is only suitable for
decorative purposes.
