Crystalline is typically a very high
temperature, extremely long, and often
unpredictable firing process.
Variations come from everything from
the subtle differences in glaze batches,
the location of the piece in the kiln and
the firing schedules. It is almost
impossible to predict the results in
each kiln load.
All crystalline (except some bowls and
platters) requires a tray be created for
every piece to catch the glaze as it
runs off of the pottery during the
crystal forming stages. Nancy creates
each tray uniquely for the pot and
when necessary, its lid. This tray is
glued to the pot prior to glazing and
broken off of the bottom after firing.
Nothing "harshes my vibe" more than
having a beautiful piece chip or break
during this process.
